“In Ayurveda, there is no universal ‘healthy diet’ or perfect skincare routine. There is only what is right for your constitution. The dosha is the key to that knowledge.”
— Charaka Samhita

If you’ve ever wondered why your friend thrives on raw salads and cold smoothies while you feel exhausted and bloated after the same meal — or why certain skincare products work brilliantly for some people and break others out — the answer, according to Ayurveda, lies in your dosha.

The three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — are bioenergetic forces that govern every aspect of your physical and mental constitution. They determine how you digest food, how your skin behaves, how you respond to stress, what time of day you have the most energy, and what kind of movement, sleep, and herbs your body needs to thrive.

Understanding your dosha isn’t about being put in a box. It’s about finally having a personalised map to your own health — something the West is only beginning to understand through the lens of bio-individuality.

Take the quiz below first — then read the full breakdown for your dosha type.

Your Dosha in Daily Life

Once you know your dosha, every wellness decision gets easier. Here’s a snapshot of how each dosha shows up in diet, lifestyle, and skincare:

🌬️
Vata — Daily Guide
  • Eat warm, cooked, oily foods. Avoid raw salads and cold drinks.
  • Maintain fixed meal and sleep times — routine is medicine for Vata.
  • Favour warming herbs: ashwagandha, shatavari, ginger, cardamom.
  • Oil massage (abhyanga) with sesame oil every morning.
  • Avoid excessive travel, screen time, and multitasking.
  • Best exercise: yoga, walking, swimming — not high intensity.
🔥
Pitta — Daily Guide
  • Eat cooling foods: cucumber, coconut, coriander, mint, leafy greens.
  • Avoid excessive spice, caffeine, alcohol, and skipping meals.
  • Favour herbs: brahmi, neem, shatavari, amalaki, coriander.
  • Oil massage with coconut oil — cooling and anti-inflammatory.
  • Schedule rest and play. Pitta overworks — balance is essential.
  • Best exercise: cooling sports, swimming, yoga, cycling.
🌍
Kapha — Daily Guide
  • Eat light, warm, spiced foods. Avoid heavy, sweet, or fried foods.
  • Prioritise morning movement — break the morning sluggishness early.
  • Favour herbs: trikatu, triphala, turmeric, black pepper, ginger.
  • Dry brushing (garshana) before shower to stimulate circulation.
  • Seek new experiences regularly — Kapha benefits from novelty.
  • Best exercise: vigorous cardio, running, dancing, HIIT.

✦ What Can Shift Your Dosha Out of Balance?

Your dominant dosha is fixed at birth. But any dosha can become aggravated by lifestyle, season, or stress — leading to imbalance and illness. Knowing what aggravates yours helps you protect it.

🍂
Season
Vata rises in autumn/winter. Pitta in summer. Kapha in late winter/spring.
🍽️
Diet
Wrong foods for your dosha create ama (toxins) that drive imbalance.
😰
Stress
Each dosha has a unique stress response — anxiety (Vata), anger (Pitta), withdrawal (Kapha).
🌙
Sleep patterns
Irregular sleep aggravates Vata. Late nights aggravate Pitta. Oversleeping aggravates Kapha.
🏃
Exercise
Too much activity depletes Vata. Intense heat-sport aggravates Pitta. Too little movement stagnates Kapha.
🌡️
Climate
Dry/cold wind = Vata. Hot/humid = Pitta. Cold/damp = Kapha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be more than one dosha?
Yes — most people are a combination of two doshas (called a dual-doshic or dvandva prakriti), with one being slightly dominant. The most common combinations are Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, and Vata-Kapha. A small number of people are roughly equal in all three (tridoshic), which is considered the most balanced constitution. The quiz gives you a percentage breakdown, so you can see your full picture — not just a single label.
Can my dosha change over time?
Your core constitution (prakriti) is fixed at birth and never changes. However, your current state (vikriti) — how balanced or imbalanced your doshas are right now — changes constantly based on your diet, lifestyle, stress, and season. This is why you might feel predominantly Vata in winter (anxious, dry, cold) but more Pitta in summer (irritable, hot, ambitious). The goal in Ayurveda is to bring your vikriti back into alignment with your prakriti.
What if the quiz result doesn’t feel accurate?
Self-assessment quizzes are a useful starting point but not a substitute for a proper Ayurvedic consultation. A trained practitioner reads the pulse (nadi pariksha), examines the tongue, eyes, and nails, and asks a detailed case history — giving a far more nuanced picture than a 10-question quiz. If your result doesn’t resonate, consider booking a consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. For a free second opinion, you can also take the more detailed quiz on the Maharishi Ayurveda or Banyan Botanicals websites.
What is the rarest dosha?
Tridoshic constitution — where all three doshas are roughly equal — is considered the rarest and most balanced. Among the primary doshas, pure Vata constitution is statistically the least common. Pitta-Kapha is one of the more common dual constitutions, particularly in South Asian populations.
Which dosha should I try to be?
None — and this is one of Ayurveda’s most liberating teachings. There is no “best” dosha. Each has extraordinary gifts: Vata brings creativity, intuition, and adaptability. Pitta brings intelligence, leadership, and drive. Kapha brings endurance, compassion, and calm. The goal is not to be a different dosha — it is to be the most balanced, vibrant version of your own. The illness comes not from being Vata or Pitta or Kapha, but from being imbalanced within your own nature.
